University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Public Health
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Public Health (UMDNJ-SPH) plays a leadership role in addressing public health problems associated with modern industrial technology, particularly those related to hazardous substances in the workplace or the environment. Public health education and research are an integral part of the mission of the UMDNJ.
The UMDNJ-School of Public Health is sponsored by UMDNJ in cooperation with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey and New Jersey Institute of Technology in collaboration with the public health Research Institute. The School is comprised of three campuses, each with its own unique history and divisions. The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program is planned to accommodate working professionals as full or part-time students and to focus on job-related areas of concentration. Most classes at all campuses are offered in the late afternoons/early evenings.
- The Piscataway/New Brunswick Campus was established in 1983 and has graduated more than 500 MPH degree candidates and, since 1992, eleven doctoral degree candidates. The campus has over 200 students, and approximately 60 MPH and doctoral degree students graduate annually. The concentrations on this campus include biometrics, environmental and occupational health, epidemiology, health systems and policy, and health education and behavioral science.
- The Newark Campus welcomed its first class in 1999. The campus evolved as a result of increasing interest in the public health field and growing relationships between NJIT and Rutger's University-Newark. The Campus divisions include dental public health, health policy and administration, quantitative methods: biostatistics and epidemiology, and urban and environmental health. The Stratford/Camden Campus opened its doors for its first class in fall 2001.
- The unique focus of the MPH degree at the Stratford/ Camden Campus is health systems and policy, a course of study enhanced through collaboration with Rutgers University-Camden, Master of Public Administration Program and the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine. The availability of this program offers a unique opportunity for employees and others to enroll in MPH courses in southern New Jersey. In addition, courses are held in Trenton at the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
The faculty, consisting of 123 members, are mostly tenured full and associate professors. Additionally, adjunct faculty are used to teach in certain courses. As of June 2002, the total number of graduates is over 700, most of whom are working in a wide variety of roles in the health care sector in New Jersey.
Recruitment and retention of minority students remains a priority. The School has developed a program with the New Jersey Commissioner of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) that supports minority students with part-time jobs in the DHSS, and provides tuition remission towards an MPH degree. This plan also supports the goals of the state, which include increasing the number of minority professionals in the DHSS.
The curriculum is designed to prepare students to work with communities to identify and assess health needs and problems, plan and implement solutions, monitor progress, and evaluate program outcomes. The MPH program requires that students complete 45 credits of course work, which includes a six to nine (varies by division) credit fieldwork requirement .
