Description 2009 H1N1 (referred to as "swine flu" early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a pandemic of 2009 H1N1 flu was underway. This workshop will present some of the history and understanding the science community brings us about the viral evolution of the novel influenze A (H1N1), along with the changing epidemiology of the pandemic. The presenter will lay out the implications associated with the idea of a pandemic situation, will discuss mode of transmission among humans, what the signs and symptoms of this virus are, and will review the prevention and treatment options as well as the recommended public health policies and practices with respect to the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus.

These circumstances are in turn shaped by a wider set of forces including economics, social policies, education, housing and racial discrimination. Alzheimer's Disease - A Public Health Update

Description Over 330,000 New York residents have Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. With the elderly population increasing significantly the issues associated with Alzheimer’s disease may be overwhelming. Currently in NYS, 70 percent of the persons with Alzheimer’s disease reside in the community and 75 percent of their care is provided by family caregivers. In this session, Earl Zimmerman, MD will provide an overview of Alzheimer’s disease, describing the role and importance of primary care in early detection and treatment, and discuss emerging research. Mary Mittelman, DrPH will discuss the results of several of her studies, illustrating the positive effects of delaying admission to nursing homes by providing care to patients with Alzheimer’s disease in the community and support to caregivers.

In 2008, a joint session of the American Cancer Society, the US Multi-Society Task Force of Colorectal Cancer, and the American College of Radiology issued a consensus for CRC screening guidelines. Description New data indicates that 26 million American adults have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and millions of others are at increased risk. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, and significant increases in diabetes are expected to lead to corresponding increases in CKD and renal failure. Studies show that early identification and intervention is effective in slowing the progression of co-morbid diseases and complications of CKD in diabetes. Early detection can also help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure. African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and seniors are at increased risk for the disease. This presentation will demonstrate how outcomes can be improved through increased awareness and education on the timely evaluation and management of CKD for health care providers who care for people with diabetes; who is at risk for the disease; methods for early identification of CKD; and management of CKD in people with diabetes.

Description Colorectal cancer (CRC) affects all racial and ethnic groups, but African-Americans have the highest occurrence of CRC among all racial and ethnic groups in the US. Furthermore, CRC screening is underused among African-Americans. Various factors have been identified as barriers and facilitators to CRC screening among African-Americans. This presentation will inform participants about the background and significance of CRC screening in the African-American community, CRC treatment options, barriers and facilitators to CRC screening in this community and suggested strategies to improve screening rates. Description Diabetes prevention is possible, powerful, and proven! The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) demonstrated that lifestyle modifications that achieve and maintain modest weight loss in adults at risk for type 2 diabetes can reduce the risk of developing the disease by 58 percent. Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have pre-diabetes, a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. In the United States there are 57 million people with pre-diabetes. People with pre-diabetes are 5-15 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than someone without the condition and are also at increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and eye disease. This program will highlight the results of the DPP landmark study; describe national efforts to translate the results of the study into community settings; explain the risk factors for type 2 diabetes; discuss the role of primary care clinicians in identifying and referring patients with pre-diabetes into community programs; and describe successful statewide initiatives for diabetes prevention. Description For several years, the Surgeon General’s “My Family Health Portrait” tool has been available to the public, and individuals and families have been encouraged to discuss their family health histories at family reunions and Thanksgiving celebrations. The expectation is that knowledge about family health history will inform risk assessment and serve as the basis for offering patients appropriately tailored preventive interventions such as diet, exercise or other lifestyle changes, education about signs and symptoms to facilitate earlier recognition of disease, alternative screening protocols, and, if appropriate, prophylactic pharmaceutical or surgical interventions. In the face of direct-to-consumer marketing of genetic tests, medical and public health professionals must understand why family history is important in the assessment of chronic disease risk, what tools are available to assess family health history information and how to incorporate family health history tools and information into chronic disease prevention initiatives. Description Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a common cause of diarrhea in hospitalized patients due to exposure to antibiotics and to the healthcare environment. An increase in the incidence and the severity of this disease has been reported over the past decade in the US, Canada and Europe. In addition, CDI has been observed in healthy individuals without previous exposure to established risk factors. The changing pattern of disease is in part due to the emergence of a new epidemic, hypervirulent C. difficile strain identified as BI/NAP1/027 toxinotype III. Description John W. Farrell is a graduate of Hunter College School of Social Work, where he earned an advanced degree in Social Work. He is currently employed at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey University Behavioral Healthcare’s Violence Institute. At the Violence Institute, Mr. Farrell provides training on gangs and gang interventions. Mr. Farrell also provides case management services for the Rutgers University Police Institute’s Greater Newark Safer Cities Initiative. Over the past thirty years John Farrell’s career before retirement has included several leadership positions within the Department of Health and Senior Services: Deputy Director for the Division of Addiction Services, Acting Assistant Commissioner for the Division of Addiction Services, Deputy Director for the Division of Narcotics and Drug Abuse Control, Acting Assistant Commissioner for the Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control, and Chief of Special Projects for the Division of Narcotics and Drug Abuse Control. During his career Mr. Farrell has been a field advisor for graduate students in Social Work at Columbia University School of Social Work, provided expert testimony to the House of Representatives Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control, personally or collaboratively published articles for the Journal of American Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control for Morbidity and Mortality Supplement, and received numerous awards for Drug Treatment and Prevention.

Description Successful decision-making in public health and health care administration requires the ability and agility to balance public policy, institutional strategy, program objectives, resource allocation, inter-disciplinary planning and consensus building, and "turf" issues. This seminar will discuss studying the players, politics, processes, skills and strategies needed to be developed to better understand, monitor, and actively influence health care policy making at the state and federal levels, on behalf of provider organizations, consumers, and advocacy groups. Participants will learn to be better advocates with government and how to develop collective partnerships with communities. The strategies presented will address the need for the individual to understand that in “Guerilla Policy-fare” the process is disorderly, and rarely sequential. H1N1 Influenza Pandemic Retrospective

Description The influenza pandemic of 2009 was an unprecedented event in the memory of today's public health and medical care practitioners. It was the first influenza pandemic in over 40 years. Despite years of preparation for a pandemic and other population-wide public health emergencies, both the public health system and the health care system were stretched to the limit over a period of almost a year. The epidemiologists were challenged to determine the nature, extent and severity of H1N1 disease in the population in order to target health care resources and, eventually, H1N1 vaccine. Public health departments had to mobilize their incident management teams in order to play their key role of coordinating the response to the pandemic. One part of this role was to provide guidance to the medical community on preventing and treating people with H1N1 influenza most effectively. H1N1 vaccine was produced in a remarkably short period of time, but still was not available in time for the second wave of the pandemic, leading to challenges in managing a scarce vaccine supply and delivering the vaccine in the most effective ways to protect the most vulnerable populations. Throughout, risk communication and education of the public played key roles in achieving public understanding and cooperation with prevention efforts. For the first time, many public health agencies used "social media" to get the message out. Objectives: After watching this broadcast participants will be able to: Understand the key role that epidemiology played in guiding the public health response to the H1N1 influenza pandemic. Understand the challenges of managing a scarce vaccine supply in the face of the second wave of the H1N1 pandemic. Description James H. Rimmer, Ph.D. will document the prevalence of obesity in youth and adults with disabilities and will further explore the resultant secondary conditions and their impact. Dr. Rimmer will identify community characteristics that promote health for persons with disabilities, and discuss the effective use of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention MAPPS strategies (Media, Access, Point of decision, Price, Social support/services) to ensure applicability among persons with disabilities. Objectives: After watching this broadcast participants will: Describe the prevalence of obesity among individuals with disabilities across the lifespan. Explain the health impact of obesity among individuals with disabilities. List the environmental and societal contributors to obesity among persons with disabilities, as well as the facilitators in reduction of obesity among persons with disabilities.
