For three-quarters of a century, The Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University (Mailman SPH) has been on the cutting edge of public health education. It has assumed leadership roles in disease prevention programs and, with equal emphasis, in the active promotion of health for all. It is one of thirty-nine schools of public health in the United States accredited by the Council on Education in public health.
The academic organization of the School is constantly reviewed for its level of responsiveness to changing public health priorities. At present, the School has six Departments including
- Biostatistics
- Environmental Health Sciences
- Epidemiology
- Health Policy and Management
- Population and Family Health, and
- Sociomedical Sciences.
There are over 213 full-time faculty of which 23% are minorities. In addition, there are 151 part-time faculty members.
To earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, all students must satisfactorily complete 45 points of coursework and meet a practical experience requirement equivalent in time and effort to a minimum of one academic semester. The practicum provides educational opportunities that are different from, and supplementary to, the more academic aspects of the program whereby students are to apply what they learn in the classroom to real life problems/issues/challenges in the community.
